Debbie Smith began private oil painting lessons at age
7. Standing before an easel in a vacant garage, she
was taught the classical techniques of using a limited
palette, underpainting, and glazing.
Debbie’s formal education was medicine and science, not
art. After a few years of employment in labs and
hospitals, she changed career directions and took night
classes in illustration, design, and drawing.
Eventually she became a freelance illustrator and did a
wide variety of work: book and magazine illustration,
logos, signs, and even tableware design.
In 2000 she fulfilled her dream of building an art studio,
and returned to oil painting full time. She combined
her love of gardening and painting into one passion,
rendering close-up and dramatic profiles of flowers and
plants.
